“Hope that these letters do outdo the ones to Miss Elliott ‘cause after marrying her, I find her even finer and lovelier than I had imagined, so with so much more inspiration I should do better.” – Carl, 4 October 1944
We are delighted to announce our upcoming event, The Carl and Bobbie Love Letters (December 4th, 2-4pm, The Keep). Carl and Bobbie met in Dunmow, Essex, during a period of time when Carl (who was serving with the American military) was stationed in the area. What followed was a whirlwind romance, which we are lucky to have in our care in the form of their letters to one another.
Whilst the letters in the collection cover their courtship, marriage, Carl’s return to America, Bobbie’s trip to join him and the eventual birth of their first child, this event will provide a glimpse into one year of their life, 1944, giving attendees a chance to hear the couple’s love story in their own words.
Attendees will be able to hear the letters read out aloud, with tea, coffee and refreshments before having a chance to view the original archival material. There will also be the return of our ever-popular 1940s-style pop-up living room!
